The amazing earthen houses of the Hakka people lie in the mountains of rural Fujian province. Their design - plain and easily defended on the outside, with 3-storeys of galleried rooms on the inside - is unique. Their construction, which achieves low humidity and resistance to earthquakes, has allowed them to survive for hundreds of years. The trip also visits historic Gulangyu Island with its red-roofed mansions and parks, a charming example of China's colonial past.
