Itinerary

Choose Your Preferred Way Of Travelling!
  • The Local Way: See Japan through the eyes of the everyday locals in the most cost-effective way using its safe and efficient subways, trains and buses - fully accompanied by your private guide.

  • Day 01 - Shanghai or Beijing / Kansai / Kyoto
    Fly Shanghai/Kansai MU 225 0855/1210 (2h15m) – Daily
    Or Beijing/Kansai CA 927 0840/1240 (3h) – Daily


    Upon arrival, met and transfer to by private car or shuttle bus/train to Kyoto. Check into your hotel.

    This afternoon, we visit the beautiful Kiyomizu Temple. Besides its outstanding architecture, it is also one of the best places for cherry blossom and a view over Kyoto. Then, we walk down the “pottery street” lined with many old houses and shops/galleries. Pottery is of course a specialty here.

    Optional: Gion district of Kyoto is home to many geisha houses and traditional tea houses. You can have a traditional dinner and watch a performance of Maiko (Geisha Apprentice).

  • Day 02 - Kyoto

    This morning, visit the gorgeous Ginkakuji or commonly known as the “Silver Pavilion”. From here, take the famous Philosopher Walk, a quiet and meditative pathway that winds its way along a canal lined with lovely shrubs and trees. The walk ends near Heian Shrine for a quick visit.

    In the afternoon, it is Nijo castle, seat of Japanese medieval power for many centuries. Then, catch a kimono show in the Nishijin Textile Center (of course with shopping too!). Late afternoon, explore Teramachi, a covered shopping arcade with a very interesting Nishiki Food Market.

    Optional: Go to a Maiko Studio to dress up as Geishas and take professional photos as a family! Talk to your guide more for recommendations on the many photography plans available at the studio. Starting from 8000 yen.

  • Day 03 - Kyoto

    Enjoy a free day of exploration or take up 1 of the 4 optional full day tours:

    Option 1) Ancient Nara 
    Nara is the oldest ancient capital of Japan and is a treasure house for Japanese history.  Visit the famous Deer Park which is full of tame deer roaming around. Also visit Todaiji - Great Eastern Temple, the largest wooden building in the world with its 15 meter tall Great Buddha image. Walk through the old trail leading from Todaiji to Kasuga Grand Shrine. Afternoon, explore Naramachi, where old Edo period (1603-1868) architecture remains. If interested, walk to the ancient Gangoji Temple, one of the oldest temples in Japan.

    Option 2) Western Kyoto Explorer
    Explore the Western side for a walk into 14th and 17th century historical Kyoto. Wander into the idyllic bamboo bath of Arashiyama and enjoy a relaxing the so-called “Romantic Train” taking you on a scenic ride along the river. Enjoy 2 hours of traditional rafting down Hozugawa River. Afternoon, stop at Gekkeikan Sake brewery for a drink (at your own expenses), then continue to Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, one of Kyoto’s top 3 places to visit-10,000 tori gates line the path to the top.

    Option 3) Appreciation of Japanese Tea
    Morning, transfer to the tea farm at the outskirts of Uji (approx. 1.5 hrs). You will have a guided tour to several tea fields in the surrounding mountains. Optionally, you can have a 3km self-guided hiking tour through the beautiful tea town followed by tea tasting. Transfer further to the town of Uji. Visit Byodoin Temple, which featured at the back of Japanese 10 yen coin and Ujigami Shrine.

    Option 4) Hidden gem in East Kyoto
    Transfer to Shiga prefecture in the morning (about 1.5h drive) and visit the Hikone Castle, one of the best preserved castles of Japan. Continue to Genkyuen Landscape Garden. Head towards Otsu (approx. 1h10m drive) where we will board a cruise on Lake Biwa,. Followed by Miidera temple complex, one of the four largest temples in Japan.  Or you can bike along the lakeside.  (For Local way with private guide only covers Lake Biwa and Miidera temple)

  • Day 04 - Kyoto / Takayama

    Transfer to Kyoto Railway station for train. We recommend to try the famous “train bento” boxed lunches full with local specialities on the train!

    (Your main luggage will be couriered to your next accommodation in Tokyo, please pack an overnight bag).

    Take a 5-min walk from the train station to your traditional ryokan. Originally a wealthy farmer's house, Asunaro Ryokan is over 150 years old. Visit the Sanmachi’s historical district and see former old merchant houses that have been preserved and turned into museums, shops and sake breweries.

  • Day 05 - Takayama / Shirakawa-Go / Takayama

    After breakfast, pop by the famous Miyagawa morning market before we take an hour bus ride to Shirakawa-go, a lovely village with nestled in the Japanese Alps, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

    Afternoon, return to Takayama.

  • Day 06 - Takayama / Tokyo

    Make your way to train station to take train to Tokyo.

    Upon arrival, met and transfer to your hotel and have a walk around the central areas. This evening, see the city of neon lights!

  • Day 07 - Tokyo

    In the morning, head for Asakusa where we visit Sensoji with its huge iconic red lantern. After that, cruise on Sumidagawa ending up at the beautiful Hamarikyu garden for a cup of matcha tea and relax in the midst of landscape gardening at its best. In the afternoon, visit the Edo Tokyo Museum and the Meiji shrine.

  • Day 08 - Tokyo / Shanghai or Beijing

    Have the day at leisure. For the energetic, visit the Tsukiji Fish Market at dawn. Get the freshest sashimi or tuna here! Visit Ginza, featuring Tokyo's famous up market shopping, dining and entertainment district.

    Evening, make you way to the airport.
